Bracing is a common practice in physical therapy that uses supportive devices to stabilize a body part or joint. Unlike a cast, which would be used for fractures, braces allow for movement but still restrict motions that would cause unwanted and unnecessary stress.

Braces and supports are designed to assist and promote a patient's progress on a short-term basis on the path to regaining full function. They are not used as a long-term or permanent solution, as doing so could potentially worsen a patient's recovery by weakening muscles and reducing range of motion.
